Creating Good-Looking Varsity Jackets By Sewing Them On Yourself


Most of us have undoubtedly gone through high school and chances are, many of us have had the experience of owning and wearing varsity jackets in high school. These jackets were the pride of every student because wearing one, it gives us the pride of being in our alma mater and we get a sense of belongingness and camaraderie with our schoolmates. Our accomplishments and even our talents or skills, these jackets can show so much of our individual selves and not only the main part of ourselves which is what school we come from.

In some sense, these jackets are like a scrap book of our high school lives which we constantly fill with our accomplishments and the like. By using colorful patches, we can plainly show other people and make them understand who we truly are and knowing how to sew them on by ourselves is really important because it genuinely shows what we are capable of doing not only to other people but more importantly to ourselves.

Sewing your own patches is easy as long as you know what you’re doing and to begin, lay out all the patches you want to adorn your varsity jackets with, so you can picture out in your mind how the end result would be. In the form of felt numbers, letters, words or symbols, there are many kinds of patches to use.

Take one patch, search for the bottom felt color behind the patch that has the least amount of and it usually goes around the main color. Find a thread that has the same color as the bottom color and using a whip stitch or overcast stitch, make small evenly spaced stitches along the edge of the patch, make sure though that the thread is not visible.

Work closely to the edge and do your best to create even stitches. Use safety pins to secure the patch onto the jacket if you’re worried about the patches moving too much. Take note that typically, letters go on the left chest while numbers go on the sleeves just below the shoulder and names, large numbers or symbols usually go on the back with a slightly arced shape but it depends on your preference.
